May 2, 2021

Now into to a new month, weather patterns continues to be slightly cooler
than during a normal year, transition period is taking longer than we would
expect. It has been a slow process waiting for water conditions to warm and
clean up, as well as for winds to become less of a factor. At this time the
ocean water temperature has ranged from 72 to 74 degrees. Clarity has
fluctuated, it seems just as we see blue water moving in there is a setback
as currents push in off colored currents again. Conditions can change very
quickly at this time of year, so as days become progressively warmer we
expect to see offshore surface action pick up accordingly.

The main offshore species now has been the striped marlin, these billfish
are striking on trolled lures and on cast or dropped back baits, mainly
caballito at this time. The marlin are being found scattered throughout the
zone, at times as close as a few miles from shore. They became a bit more
finicky during the recent the full moon, as well as with fluctuating
conditions, though most charters are having at least a chance or two while
targeting these fish, with some accounting for multiple catches. Not many
dorado were seen in recent days compared to last week when we did see a few
of them.

Only an occasional yellowfin tuna were being found, these tuna were taken
while drift fishing with bait on grounds from Iman to Vinorama, the fish we
did see ranged to over 80 lb. So they are still in the area, just need the
conditions to improve a bit more to their liking. Also a handful of wahoo
were seen on these same grounds, but they were very shy to striking any
offerings.

The most common catches have been various species found off the rock
structure, such as bonito, cabrilla, red snapper, fortune jack, amberjack,
yellowtail, triggerfish and others. Anglers reported mixed success
depending on which area they targeting and how favorable the conditions
were on a given day.

Along the shore the best action we saw was reported from areas to the south
of Puerto Los Cabos, nice sized sierra were accounted for, some as large as
13 lb., also a mix of jacks and of course more triggerfish.

Good fishing, Eric

April 25, 2021

The spring season continues to be unpredictable, conditions changing daily,
overall climate is great, highs in low 80s, crowds of tourists remain
light, slowly transitioning ocean has anglers scattering in all directions
searching for productive action. Water temperature has ranged from 70 to 73
degrees, depending where you are, warmest currents being found from the
Gordo Banks towards Los Frailes. Ocean clarity is improving, though on and
off north winds continued to slow this process. Swells increased some this
week, coinciding with the full moon cycle.

Local bait supplies remained steady for caballito, also a mix of sardinas
being found, slabs of squid and ballyhoo have been other options. The
majority of the limited numbers of charters going out have found the most
consistent action working the bottom structures near La Fortuna, Iman and
San Luis Banks. Drift fishing over these high spots while using yo-yo jigs
and a mix of baits produced a variety of species. Most common catch was the
Mexican bonito, though there were some quality red snapper, cabrilla
(leopard grouper) and amberjack also being accounted for, average catches
per boat was in the 8 to 15 fish range, so overall the bite did improve
some over the past week.

There were more yellowfin tuna seen this week, sizes ranged from 15 to 90
lb. These fish were taken off of the similar grounds where bottom action
was found, the tuna hit on strips of squid mainly, but also some were taken
on the yo-yo style jigs. So this is encouraging news, even though numbers
were not great, one boat did have four tuna in one morning, at least we are
seeing more than we have recently and this action should only improve as
conditions continue to warm, winds settle and water clears.

There have been reports of decent billfish action being found offshore near
the 1150 spot, also a few nice dorado being found on the same grounds,
where water has been blue and warmer. With the weather still a bit hit or
miss and with only being small numbers of anglers in town, we have not had
many boats going farther offshore, most opting to fish closer in where
numbers and variety were decent.

Inshore action was limited to mainly an on and off sierra bite, depending
where the fish happen to be on a certain day, also a few nice sized jack
crevalle and an occasional pompano or pargo colorado.

Good fishing, Eric

April 18, 2021

This month started off with us seeing more numbers of tourists and visiting
anglers arriving, a little flurry during spring break. Now mid-month we are
seeing very limited numbers of anglers showing up, even though we have had
more interest with people asking about reservations for the coming fall
season. It looks as though this will be a slow spring and summer season for
local fishing businesses. As Covid vaccines are becoming more readily
available, even to local residents at this time, people seem to still be
more hesitant to travel internationally. The weather recently is very
pleasant, ideal climate, light scattered early morning marine layer cloud
cover, lighter winds and high temperatures of about 85 degrees. Great time
to visit, with the lighter crowds and excellent climate.

Ocean conditions have been slow to transition this season, but water
temperature is now in the 72/73 degree range and cleaner water is slowly
pushing back closer to shore. In the meantime anglers have found the most
productive fishing action to be off the bottom rock structure and along the
shoreline. Most common species being the Mexican bonito, which has been the
case for the past month now. An occasional yellowtail, amberjack, grouper
or red snapper mixed in. Main bait source has continued to be caballito, no
sardinas to speak of, except some of the softer clear type that are only
used as dead bait. We did see one or two tuna through the week, caught off
the same areas where anglers were bottom fishing. As temperatures improve,
warmer and cleaner water appears in the coming weeks we do anticipate
surface activity to break open.

Along the shoreline the main action was for sierra and jack crevalle, as
water warms up we should see more roosterfish move in. Normal patterns
usually see the end of April as a major turning point for water conditions
becoming more attractive to the popular gamefish, so we are anxious to see
this happen. We are also optimistic that once anglers see that fish reports
are greatly improved that they will decide to visit.

Good fishing, Eric

April 11, 2021

With the local Easter vacation week now past, beach crowds have returned to
more reasonable levels and most residents are now back to work. We are
seeing larger numbers of tourists arriving due to this now being spring
break period for many schools in the U.S. Though not a high percentage of
these visitors are anglers, so for this reason we have limited numbers of
fishing charters. This is now a transition period for ocean conditions, a
slow unpredictable process, when northern winds reside and ocean currents
stabilize, becoming warmer and bringing in blue water closer to shore. At
this time water temperature has been in the 69 to 71 degree range
throughout the zone. Daytime highs are reaching the mid-80s and it is also
the time when the cool ocean and warm land air currents mix and create a
marine layer, resulting in thick fog at times and limited visibility.

Supplies of caballito remain steady in the marina area, though sardinas
have been scarce, not being found in close enough proximity for commercial
bait netters to find. Some charters were able to jig up some additional
larger baitfish such as chihuil, scad and spanish mackerel near the Gordo
Banks.

Overall the better fishing action was found close to shore for good numbers
of sierra, with the large sized jack crevalle mixed in. Also there was a
variety of species being accounted for over the many rocky high spots, with
anglers using a mix of yo-yo jigs and bait while drift fishing. Most
numerous are the Mexican bonito, these are different than the Californian
bonito, the local bonito taste similar to tuna and can be prepared all the
same ways, they are feisty fighters, though average in the 4 to 8 lb.
range. We did see one 40 lb. yellowfin tuna early in the week, but with
currents shifting and becoming a little off colored again these tuna are
not on the bite now.

Despite the cooler water we did see a few wahoo starting to bite on the
grounds to the north of Punta Gorda, striking on trolled Rapalas and yo-yo
jigs, sizes were up to 25 lb., still only a few fish being seen, but this
is encouraging for when water conditions improve slightly we should see
these fish become more active. Conditions can change rapidly this time of
year and we are definitely feeling the weather become a bit warmer every
day.

We did see a few nice cabrilla, grouper and amberjack landed, a couple of
these were in the fifty pound class. Not as many red snapper as we would
normally expect for this time frame, though it is still early in the
season, pelagic red crabs were not being seen at this time either.

With limited anglers in town we did not see many reports for offshore
action for the striped marlin, last we knew they were seeing the billfish
near the 1150 spot.

Good fishing, Eric

April 4, 2021

Easter weekend meant very large beach crowds, supposedly authorities were
going to control capacity levels, but it seemed to get a bit out of their
means to do so. This is always a hugely popular traditional holiday that
families swarm to enjoy themselves on the local beaches. Weather was great,
highs of 85 degrees, light winds, swells increased some, so surfers were
also happy.

We also saw more numbers of anglers arriving this past week, water
conditions were a bit up and down, ocean temperatures warmed up to the
72/73 degree range, though currents were pushing off colored waters in
different directions. Main bait source was caballito, though there were
sardinas also being found along the shoreline near San Luis, it was a
matter of getting the bait netters to travel this distance and then have to
negotiate with the higher surf conditions. Some people were also using
slabs of squid and there was still a lot of yo-yo jigs being used over the
bottom structure.

Most consistent fishing grounds were found near Cardon, La Fortuna, Iman,
San Luis and to Vinorama. A wide variety of species were accounted for, the
most common being the bonito, with leopard grouper and amberjack also found
in decent numbers. There were a handful of yellowfin tuna landed from the
La Fortuna area, to over 40 lb., these tuna hit on caballito, sardinas or
strips of squid, anglers were lucky to land one, as they were still scarce,
but as conditions improve we should see more of these yellowfin being
hooked into.

Offshore the striped marlin action was definitely picking up, especially
around the 1150 spot, many boats had multiple fish accounted for while
using trolled lures, caballito and ballyhoo. We also heard of a couple of
sailfish, not a normal catch in the cooler water.

Along the shoreline the main catch was for jack crevalle and some sierra,
as water continues to warm we should see some more roosterfish.

Lots of sea life was seen, as people were commonly spotting whales,
porpoise, manta rays, sea lions, turtles and a variety of sea birds as well.

Good fishing, Eric

March 28, 2021

With the first wave of spring break vacationers now arriving, we are seeing
many more tourists in town. Though not a high percentage of these visitors
are anglers and we are still seeing limited numbers of charters being
booked. Weather patterns remained unpredictable, we are feeling an overall
warming trend, though still changing daily, mostly clear sunny skies, highs
averaging 80 degrees. Ocean temperatures are averaging 69 to 70 degrees,
though cooler currents are found near Cabo San Lucas and on the Pacific.
Wind cycles remained, predominately out of the north, this has meant a
delay in ocean conditions being able to stabilize and become cleaner. This
is now the midst of transition time, winter to spring, every year can vary
and this year things seem to be settling down later than normal. Typically
by mid-April, which is in a couple of weeks, we see ocean temperatures
reach the mid-70s, so we do expect this pattern to arrive soon.

Anglers are now finding mainly caballito for the available bait source,
with a scattering of sardinas being found. The main fishing grounds now
being concentrated on have been from Chileno, Palmilla and north to Iman
Bank. Working inshore grounds for a mix of sierra, snapper, jacks and
roosterfish. As well as the various rocky high spots throughout the zone.
Drift fishing while using various baits and yo-yo jigs produced a large
variety of species, more bonito than anything else, the largest species
being encountered have been a mix of amberjack, yellowtail and various
grouper species, all of these being prized eating specimens.

There were several yellowfin tuna accounted for through the week, they
ranged in sizes from 20 to 80 lb. These tuna are hanging around the same
high spots and as conditions become more favorable we anticipate more
consistent action. There were limited reports of striped marlin be found
scattered further offshore, as clarity was cleaner some 15 miles offshore.
Still spotty though and we did not have many anglers venturing out to look
for this action. As more productive numbers of fish were found closer to
shore.

Still quite a few whales hanging around, though typically these would be
the final weeks for this before they head back north. We see forecasts of
warmer weather for the first week of April, so this should help get
conditions more on track.

Good fishing, Eric

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

March 21, 2021

Well the official start of spring season has arrived, weather conditions
are ideal, with clear sunny skies and high temperatures of 80 degrees,
light crowds of tourists, making this a perfect time to visit. North winds
slacked over the weekend, we do expect that these patterns to continues and
should stabilize during this transition period as days progressively become
warmer. Ocean temperature is now averaging 70 to 72 degrees, warmer areas
found outside of Cabo San Lucas. Swells are slight.

In the vicinity of the Puerto Los Cabos marina bait supplies remained
steady for caballito and sardinas were also obtainable, requiring a bit
more patience while waiting for them to be netted each morning. The
majority of the limited charters going out each day have been fishing the
areas from La Fortuna, Iman Bank and north to Vinorama. Still mainly
inshore and bottom action now, with this warming trend we do expect to see
more surface activity pick up.

There are now reports of some scattered striped marlin action being found
on the outside, some 15 miles or more offshore, where cleaner currents were
encountered, this should only improve as conditions become more favorable.
Also in recent days a handful of yellowfin tuna to 80 lbs. were landed near
the Iman Bank, this was mainly by commercial pangeros bringing large
quantities of bait and putting in over time, as the tuna they did hook up
with were later in the day while drift fishing with sardinas and also
chumming with strips of squid. We did not hear of any wahoo or dorado to
speak of, but it is encouraging that these yellowfin are on the local
grounds and we expect them to become more prevalent as spring season
progresses.

Off the bottom the action was good early in the morning, main species being
the bonito, which ranged to 10 lb., also in the mix were a handful of
yellowtail and amberjack, with a couple of nicer sized specimens to 50 lb.
reported. A mix of cabrilla and grouper as well, a few to 25 lb. plus, as
well as some red snapper to round out the action. Off the deeper rocky high
spots some of the prized baqueta were accounted for. It does seem that in
recent days the all-around bottom action has improved, besides the yo-yo
jigs, soaking bait down deep was working.

Along the shoreline we saw more roosterfish action, juvenile fish, but some
to over 20 lb. Also quite a few sierra being found along the beach
stretches towards the south.

Good fishing, Eric

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

March 14, 2021

We are still seeing light crowds of tourists, though people do seem to now
be showing more interest in possibly making travel plans during the coming
spring season. Weather has been in transition, though another cold front
swept through over the weekend, with strong gusting winds from the north.
Ocean temperatures are in the 68 to 70 degree range. Water clarity is
spotty greenish, starting to clear up some around the Iman Bank, though
this recent cold front did not help stabilize conditions. This entire
winter season it seems we have dealt with more wind than usual. Typically
with the arrival of spring time we also see progressively warmer and calmer
conditions.

Anglers were using some caballito and various sardina species for bait,
also a lot of the action off the bottom structure has come on yo-yo jigs.
Charter fleets have been fishing areas from Chileno to the Iman Bank and
even as far north as Vinorama when weather allowed. With the cooler
conditions the most productive action was found down over rocky high spots,
up to 200 ft. deep. There was a wide variety of quality eating species
found, though none of them in great numbers, except for the bonito.
Highlights were some nice grouper, amberjack, red snapper and an occasional
yellowtail.

Inshore there was good sierra action found near Chileno, but also a lot of
boat pressure, as this was one of the main options going, especially on
windy days, sierra were of nice size, a handful of fish to 8 lb. Chance at
pompano, pargo, triggerfish and jack crevalle as well.

Early in the week some of the commercial pangeros and private boaters
landed some yellowfin tuna near the Iman Ban, these were quality fish in
the 70 to 90 lb. class. These guys were experimenting with the kite and
helium balloon techniques, using the gummy flying fish, with the lighter
boat pressure they got into some nice fish. Though as weather turned, this
action faded out later in the week.

Still quite a few whales in the region, though this is normally the final
month we see numbers of these mammals, before they head back on their
northern migration.

Good fishing, Eric

March 7, 2021

As we are now only a couple of weeks away from official start of the spring
season, we are already starting to feel the transitional warming trend
develop and days are progressively lengthening. Local daylight light
savings time will change on April 4, one hour ahead. As vaccinations are
becoming more obtainable we have noticed an increase of persons making
reservations to visit during the coming months, we expect it will be a slow
process, but at least things appear to be swinging in the right direction.

This week started out wild, as a major wind front from the north swept
through all of Baja, this had been forecast, they were not wrong, as gusts
to 30 mph plus picked up Sunday night, creating dangerous ocean conditions
and both local ports were closed to all navigation, included all
sportfishing. By Monday afternoon the front had crazily passed on through
and conditions settled down quickly, enabling port authorities to reopen
activities starting later than same day.

With the conditions still persisting of on and off winds, ocean turned
greenish and cooler, average water temperature in the 68 to 70 degree
range, very slight swell, but there have been strong currents pushing
through on the fishing grounds. Anglers found a mix of baitfish available
in the marina area, caballito and a couple varieties of sardinas in
sporadic numbers.

With minimal numbers of charters even going out recently, most have been
fishing Chileno, Palmilla, Gordo Banks and north to Vinorama, spread out
trying different areas. The better inshore action was being found towards
the south, mainly for sierra, while the more productive bottom action was
to the north, when weather permitted. Anglers were using yo-yo jigs and
various baits while drift fishing over rocky high spots, more often in
depths ranging 120 to 200 ft. There were more numbers of bonito on certain
deeper grounds, especially earlier in the day. Swift currents made fishing
more challenging, but with persistence some quality species such as
yellowtail, amberjack, leopard grouper and red snapper were accounted for,
some of these to over 30 lb. The more exotic species for the week was a
golden jack, which are not very common in recent years as well as another
golden cabrilla.

Did not hear of any dorado found recently, there were reports of a few
stray wahoo being seen as well as a handful of yellowfin tuna, smaller fish
hanging on same high spots as were the bottom species. No billfish seen on
local grounds either, the green water not to their liking. We did hear of
scattered striped marlin action from Cabo San Lucas. We expect that as soon
as the ocean clears and warms up, as daytime temperatures increase, winds
settle, that the all-around fishing action will improve significantly.

Good fishing, Eric

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

February 28, 2021

The month of February is finally over, it definitely lived up to its
reputation of being unpredictable, we saw a little bit of everything these
past few weeks. Glad that it is past, we are feeling a slight warming trend
as spring time nears, ocean temperature now in the 68 degree range, as
north winds continue to pick up in cycles. Clarity of water is also up and
down, this is how it often is during this time frame. Still only limited
numbers of tourists arriving, even less anglers, though we anticipate times
will improve, as many people in the U.S. and elsewhere now have had their
Covid 19 vaccinations or will be having them soon and then will be more
open for making travel plans.

Most fishing action now has taken place from Chileno, Palmilla, Gordo Banks
and north to Vinorama. Bait netters are having trouble finding supplies of
sardinas, the main bait source has been caballito, a lot of yo-yo style jig
fishing going on now.

Drift fishing over the rocky grounds, more often in 120 to 200 feet of
water, with available bait, but more so on yo-yo jigs. Main catch by far
has been the bonito, some of them up to 8 lb., hitting best earlier in the
morning. Same areas were producing a variety of grouper, snapper, cabrilla,
yellowtail and amberjack, limited numbers, but quality fish. Some charters
would have up to three four yellowtail, sizes up to 25 lb., majority of
these yellows came from areas further north near Vinorama.

Closer to shore anglers found sierra, pargo and triggerfish. Heard a couple
of reports of seeing dorado or wahoo, uncommon to see these gamefish in
such cold water.

No local billfish bite being reported, as conditions improve we expect to
see more striped marlin move in. We did hear of a couple reports of
swordfish sightings from sportfishers searching further offshore.

A handful of smaller sized yellowfin tuna were brought in, fishing the same
local grounds, also there were sightings of much larger yellowfin, up to
150 lb., coming up for a quick showing on the surface and then disappearing
even quicker, they are in the area, though cold off colored water and full
moon does not help.

Good fishing, Eric
